Lubricating Your Front End

Lubing your vehicles front suspension is vital to the life of all it's wear surfaces.  On an air-cooled VW, it's important to have the front end raised up off the ground to ensure there is no weight on the components.  Load on these components could inhibit proper lubrication.

TOOLS REQUIRED:

1 - Jack

2 - Jack stands

1 - Grease gun

Rags

PARTS REQUIRED:

Automotive grease

INSTRUCTIONS

1.  Place blocks in front and behind the rear wheels.  Put the parking brake "ON".

2.  Place jack under the center of the front axle beam and raise vehicle up.

3.  Place jack stands under the outer edges of the front axle beam and carefully lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.

4.  Locate the grease fittings and wipe all dirt from them with a clean rag.

5.  With your grease gun, pump each fitting until CLEAN grease comes out from around the end of the axle tube.  Repeat  this on ALL grease fittings for your particular front end.  For those with early cars with out ball joints, pay particular attention to the king and link pins these have grease fittings and need grease too.  Also those with busses, don't forget the steering pivot pin in the center of the axle; yes there's a fitting there too.  I cannot stress the importance of pumping clean grease into ALL these fittings until clean grease comes out.  Doing so will purge all contaminates from these critical wear surfaces ensuring them long life.

6.  With your rag, wipe away all the excess grease from the fittings as well as the old, nasty grease that was purged from the axle areas.

7.  Jack up the car and remove the jack stands.  Now lower the car slowly to the ground.
