Exhaust P&P

As stated on the previous page, my main focus in P&Ping these heads, was to clean up and polish the exhaust ports.  Work here can really pay off in HP gains.  I started by using an 80 grit sanding wheel to smooth out the ends of the ports where the header mounts.  This is the easy part.  Since my engine is going to be mild, I didn't want to "hog" it out; only smooth it.  I simply knocked the ridges off and got down to the smooth base material.

Note the difference in the ends of the ports just with the use of the sanding wheel!!  The most critical area, is the area directly under the exhaust valves and around the valve guides.  There is several ponies hiding out under there where the port makes a fast 90 degree bend (on the inside if the bend).  Again, I wasn't looking to enlarge this area too much, just do my best to smooth it.  It came out about as good as I could hope to get it with my VERY limited tools.  With the right tools and a few more days, I could probably get it polished out, but I don't have the $$$ for all the special grinding and smoothing bits.
